What groundworks actually are

Groundworks cover everything between the site as we find it and the moment a surface can be laid: excavation to depth, removing spoil, trimming and levelling the formation, setting falls, forming drainage and building a compacted sub-base.

On a typical Cumbrian project it is more than half the time on site and a good share of the cost — and none of it is visible when we leave.

Why depth and compaction decide the outcome

Stone is laid in layers and compacted in passes rather than tipped and levelled in one go. Each pass locks the material so it stops behaving like loose aggregate and starts behaving like a slab.

Skip that, and the surface above will move. On a driveway that shows as ruts and cracking where the wheels track; on a patio it shows as slabs that rock and joints that open.

Falls and water

Cumbria is wet. Falls are planned away from the house before excavation begins, and permeable build-ups let water drain through the construction instead of running across it. Standing water is a design decision, not bad luck.

How to tell it has been done properly

Ask what depth is being excavated, what stone is being used, how many compaction passes, and where the water is going. A contractor who has planned the groundworks will answer in seconds. One who has not will talk about the surface instead.
