Usually not on the drive itself, but we agree alternative arrangements before we start and always keep a walkable route to your door.

What Happens During Ground Preparation

Ground preparation is the least photogenic and most decisive phase of any project. Here is exactly what happens, in the order it happens, and what you should expect to see from the window.

Setting out and protection

Before anything is lifted we mark the finished shape on the ground, confirm the levels against your threshold and the road, and agree how you will get in and out of the house each day.

Boundaries, planting and the pavement crossing are protected first. Where an edge runs tight to brickwork, that section is broken out by hand rather than by machine.

Excavation and spoil removal

The existing surface and any soft material beneath it is lifted, usually by mini excavator, and loaded straight into a grab lorry at the kerb. Well-run sites do not stockpile spoil on your lawn.

Depth is dictated by what we find. A frontage that turns out to have been laid thin over made ground will be dug deeper than planned — that decision is made on site, and we explain it before we make it.

Levels, falls and drainage

Falls are set away from the house, worked back from the door threshold. Existing chambers are brought up to the finished level, and where a cover sits in the middle of a drive it is replaced with a recessed tray so the surface can run across it.

Sub-base and edge restraints

Geotextile is laid, then open-graded stone is spread and compacted in layers. Only once the base is solid do the edges go in — kerbs, granite setts or blocks, bedded on concrete and haunched so they hold the surface permanently.

By the end of preparation the site should look finished in miniature: the exact shape of your driveway, in stone, at the right level.
