Choose forgiving surfaces
Resin bound is seamless, so there is nothing to trip on and scooters run smoothly. Textured porcelain grips when wet. Both wash clean, which matters more than any other feature by year three.
Keep sightlines open
Being able to see the whole garden from the kitchen window changes how much it is used. Design level changes and planting to preserve that view rather than interrupt it.
Zone for now and later
The trampoline corner becomes a dining terrace in eight years. Duct power and get levels and drainage right across the whole garden now, so future changes are surface-only.
Lawn still matters
Keep a proper run of grass. Hard surfaces should frame it, not replace it — a fully paved family garden is almost always regretted.
