A traditional garden should look as though it has always been there. That is harder than it sounds, and it depends almost entirely on material choice.
Borrow from the building
Cumbrian sandstone, slate and limewash have their own tonal family. Warm honeyed resin, riven-textured porcelain and granite setts sit within it; brilliant white and jet black do not.
Soften every line
Where a modern scheme wants a crisp junction, a traditional one wants planting spilling over the edge. Leave margins for it at design stage rather than adding beds afterwards.
Modern performance, traditional face
You can have a permeable, low-maintenance, properly drained surface that still reads as gravel or stone. This is where the right resin blend earns its keep on a period property.
