Limit the palette
Two hard materials, three at most. One surface for movement, one for dwelling, one accent. Every extra material halves the impact of the others.
Let geometry do the work
Align terrace edges with window reveals and door openings. When the outside grid answers the building's grid, a garden reads as designed even before planting arrives.
Massed planting, few species
Repetition over variety. Large drifts of grasses, structural evergreens and one or two specimen trees will outperform a mixed border in a contemporary scheme, and take a fraction of the upkeep.
Light as architecture
