Outdoor Kitchens: What to Consider
An outdoor kitchen is a building project disguised as a piece of furniture. Getting the groundwork and services right matters more than the appliances.
Position
Close enough to the house that carrying things is easy; far enough that smoke does not enter the doors. Prevailing wind in Cumbria is south-westerly — plan for it.
Services first
Power, water and waste all need ducting before any surface is laid. Retrofitting means lifting a terrace. This is the single most common regret we hear.
Materials that cope
Porcelain worktops, marine-grade stainless, powder-coated aluminium carcasses. Anything with an exposed timber core will not thank you for February.
Shelter and light
A pergola or overhang turns an occasional summer feature into a year-round one, and gives you somewhere to fix task lighting over the working surface.
