The Difference Between a Good and a Poor Resin Installation

Bound, not bonded

Resin bound means every stone is coated and mixed before it is laid, giving a permeable, smooth surface. Resin bonded means loose stone scattered over a resin layer — cheaper, rougher, and it sheds aggregate for years. If a quote is unusually low, this is often why.

The five things that separate them

None of these are visible in a photograph taken on handover day.

• Base: a compacted permeable sub-base versus resin laid over whatever was there
• Mixing: weighed, timed, forced-action batches versus eyeballed buckets and a paddle
• Resin: UV-stable binder that holds tone versus a cheaper system that yellows in a few summers
• Edges: proper restraint and hand-finished detail versus crumbling perimeters
• Weather: stopping when the base is damp versus laying anyway to finish on time

What failure looks like

Loose stone underfoot within months, patchy colour where batches differed, a yellowing cast in strong light, cracking along wheel tracks where the base moved, and edges breaking away because nothing was holding them.

Questions worth asking any installer

Ask these before you compare prices, not after.

• What depth are you excavating, and where does the spoil go?
• Is the resin UV stable, and what is the mix ratio?
• How are batches mixed and measured?
• What restrains the edges?
• What happens if it rains on the day of the pour?
